When Technology Becomes an Ecosystem
The emerging technologies of 2026 point to a shift towards systems that are more personalised, distributed and resource-efficient. Their value will depend on the ability to coordinate relationships, decisions and responsibilities.
The report Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2026, published by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Frontiers, identifies ten innovations that are moving from research into early practical applications. They span different fields — energy, materials, healthcare, manufacturing and artificial intelligence — yet, considered together, they describe a broader transformation.
The first common feature is personalisation. Some technologies are designed around an individual patient or a specific context, moving beyond models based on producing identical, standardised solutions. The second is distribution: energy, food, materials and knowledge can be produced or activated closer to where they are needed. The third concerns material efficiency, with systems capable of achieving results while reducing the use of energy, water, land and other resources.
The individual examples make this direction visible. Energy grids can integrate buildings, vehicles and factories as active nodes; personalised therapies begin with the characteristics of the patient; precision fermentation reduces dependence on particular agricultural and geographical conditions; world models connect data from sensors and different experiences to interpret the behaviour of physical systems.
The most significant transformation, however, concerns the way in which these elements are connected. Value shifts from the capacity to produce large quantities of identical units to the possibility of generating situated responses, close to the point of use and shaped by conditions as they emerge. Production becomes more distributed, and coordination assumes a central role.
In this scenario, a technology operates within an environment composed of infrastructure, data, institutions, communities, rules and capital. Its development depends on the capacity of the entire system to recognise the resources available, connect them and adapt its decisions. A building can contribute to the stability of the energy grid; a hospital can also become a site of therapeutic production; through its choices, a local authority can influence how the benefits of new infrastructure are distributed.
The locus of responsibility also shifts. Decisions once concentrated within large industrial or institutional organisations are distributed among a plurality of actors: operators, businesses, public authorities, research centres, investors and users. The coordination of this network determines who will be able to access the new possibilities, which resources will be recognised, and how value and risk will be distributed.
For this reason, the report identifies trust and access as two decisive conditions. Personalised and distributed systems require new approaches to validation, data sharing, the attribution of responsibility and access to benefits. Governance becomes embedded in the very structure of innovation and shapes its economic, social and territorial effects.
The World Economic Forum report thus serves as a map of the architectures that are emerging. The future of these technologies will depend on the quality of the ecosystems they enter and on their capacity to evolve alongside the people, institutions and environments that will make them operational.
Like any map, this one too is the result of a selection. Bringing certain technologies to the foreground helps to define the priorities of the debate and the trajectories towards which attention, resources and expectations are directed. The selection inevitably reflects a point of view: the report should therefore be read as an authoritative yet situated perspective, capable of making some possibilities visible while others remain in the background.
