Maurizio Morgantini

Maurizio Morgantini is an Italian architect, designer and urbanist whose work has made a significant contribution to the development of design and technological innovation in Italy and internationally. After graduating in Architecture in Milan in 1974, he developed a pioneering approach that brings together physical space, advanced design and high-tech systems.

Academic and Institutional Roles

Academic career: since 1985, he has been a tenured Professor of Design and Technology at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), where he has promoted international research into technological development, environmentally conscious design and the relationship between technology and human-centred space.
Leadership in Italian design institutions: he served as President of the ADI Foundation — part of the Italian Association for Industrial Design — from 2005 to 2008, and as President of ISIA, the Higher Institute for Artistic Industries, from 2007 to 2010. He is also President of iiSBE Italia, the Italian chapter of the International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment.
Systemic innovation: Morgantini is one of the founders of Diotima Society, a global network that explores and develops innovative, meta-territorial models of cooperation and development.

Projects

Since the 1980s, Morgantini’s work has focused on the application of industrial design to communication technologies and complex multimedia environments. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with major companies and institutions including Olivetti, Sony, RAI, SIP, Deutsche Bank, Credito Italiano and Cariplo.

Among his most significant projects are:

the redesign of the Great Hall at the University of Milan, incorporating the first integrated multimedia conferencing system;
the Investment Centre model developed for the F&F Group and Deutsche Bank.
